Rumo ao Nathan’s 2020 Ep. #1 (Campeonato de Hotdogs)

What’s up everyone? Welcome to Corbucci Eats! Today I’m here to film a hot dog training, ’cause this is the first episode of Road to Nathan’s 2020! Road to Nathan’s 2020 We made a partnership, me and The Famous BD, ’cause they have a hot dog, the sausage and the bread are really similar to the ones on Nathan’s So I’ll have my practice sessions here But wait, do you know what is Nathan’s? Do you know what it means? I’ll explain it to you. But first, if you don’t know the channel, subscribe, leave a thumbs up, follow me on Instagram And let’s do this ’cause I’m hungry! Subscribe And activate the notifications You, who don’t know Nathan’s yet, I’ll leave on the e-card the video that I recorded on the USA in the championship And today I’ll tell you guys a little about why this championship is so important and why I want to compete on it A little about the history and the main competitors, so let’s do this! Nathan’s hot dog is a traditional USA hot dog. It is only the bread and the sausage. There’s a few variations with some dressing and other things There’s ketchup and mustard, which they can use on this hot dog But Nathan’s championship is basically only the bread and the sausage and nothing else Of course people can use the condiments if they want to during the championship But competitors don’t do this ’cause they lose time Dude, this championship started on the 70’s. The time limit changed several times, but it started by the end of 1970 And on the 80’s it started what we have today as default, actually almost default, ’cause the time limit changed again on the 2000’s But it was around 10 to 15 minutes of championship and the record back then was around 15 hot dogs Just so you guys know, today the record is 74! It was last year, when Joey broke the record in 2018 And the championship kept going, it gained popularity and kept growing, new competitors started showing up, each time better And this record kept going up little by little A lot of what I’m saying here I saw on the documentary The Good the Bad and the Hungry, on ESPN, and watched it on the USA and thought I could put the link here for you guys I bought it for 1 dollar, it was on YouTube, but it is only available on the USA It tells the story on a really cool way, it tells details of the competitors lives The biggest rivalry of all times, which I’ll talk about in a while Unfortunately I couldn’t access it and couldn’t put it here for you guys So I’ll tell you a little about all this Ok, so we go through the 90’s, the record kept going up, until we got to the 2000’s, when the record was 25 hot dogs It had already risen 10 hot dogs since the beginning of the championship So there was a milestone which basically put all food competitions on the map And that’s probably the reason why I’m recording this video today In 2001 a dude appeared, he’s japanese, he lived in Japan and he was already starting to become known there ‘Cause he ate a lot and started to appear on the TV And his name is Takeru Kobayashi I don’t know if you guys ever heard of him He still competes but he’s not on the MLE Which means that he can’t compete on Nathan’s. MLE is the League that organizes some championships and Nathan’s is one of them So, he came from Japan and the record was 25 hot dogs. I don’t know if I’ll find images for you guys, but the people who competed back then were giant, very fat Everyone there trying to break the hot dog record And back then Kobayashi he was a slim teenager, so no one showed any appreciation for him He traveled from Japan exclusively for the championship and when he got there he promised he’d eat 30~35 hot dogs Everyone thought that he couldn’t make it, that it was impossible And dude, on the 4th of July of 2001 he ate 50 hot dogs He doubled the previous record of 25, and he became a celebrity over night He gained popularity on the USA, he moved to the USA, everyone wanted to know how he trained What he did, how he managed to eat that much, if it was a natural talent And he could do this just because he changed his hot dog eating technique Later, when I get to the techniques I’ll explaing it to you guys But the dude was revolutionary; From 2001 on the dude was untouchable, there were all other competitors and there was Kobayashi He was the king and no one could even get close to him Until, by the year of 2004, Joey Chestnut appeared, many people know him today He is more famous than Kobayashi When he appeared, he wasn’t the monster that he is today, he already ate really good, but he started by losing, by a lot, to Kobayashi But he kept seeking this evolution, he worked really hard The documentary shows all this rivalry. He was basically the only person that could hit head on with Kobayashi The first time that he competed he ate 40 hot dogs So a really good number, close to Kobayashi’s number And year by year he kept on rising this number. He kept on training, and Kobayashi as well Kobayashi got to 55… almost 60 hot dogs… and this rivalry went on until 2007. The year of 2007 was the year that Joey won And many things happened to Kobayashi that I didn’t even know, which I saw on the documentary Kobayashi thought about quitting all competitions ’cause his mother died, and she was his inspiration and motivation to everything in his life He had arthritis on his jaw, as well, from all his training I didn’t even know this was possible… but the dude really pushed too hard the jaw joint So he wound up having an arthritis And he participated on many championships trying to recover from this and he suffered a lot In 2007 he was still really impaired. So all of these things added up So Joey won. But not only because of this, Joey had his merit. Even though all of this happened, he was a warrior, he tried really hard. Joey ate 66 hot dogs and Kobayashi 63 Both of them got better over the years, but Joey really surpassed Kobayashi and on the following years he kept winning, got even better Until the year of 2017 (*2018), when he made the world record of 74 hot dogs, and he is on the same position that Kobayashi was before Now he is basically untouchable, mainly on the hot dog championship, which is his specialty, so now no one can get near his record Just so you guys know, this year the second place ate 50 and he ate 71 So, the dude trained and he has the merit for this So, after the history I’ll talk about the techniques… Kobayashi’s revolutionary technique You all probably saw some videos from the championship and can notice ‘Cause until 2001 people dunk the food on the water, which usually makes it easier ’cause you make it more wet, which makes you swallow it easier So, until 2001, people would take the whole hot dog and put it inside the glass of water, which made it wet and easier to eat And they drank the water at the same time to help them swallow these hot dogs And Kobayashi, on 2001, started analyzing how he could eat faster. He changed this idea: instead of dunking he thought “what if I ate it separately? Will it help?” So before he went to the USA he trained a lot and he created the Solomon Method Which is basically: you have the bread and the sausage, you take away the sausage and eat it first, ’cause it’s already wet and you can eat it faster While you wet the bread inside the glass of water and then swallow it as fast as you can ’cause it’ll be wet and easier The images are for informational purpose, you shouldn’t try this at home So this technique was what allowed him to doubled the record from 25 to 50 hot dogs And, of course, his capacity and speed But today everyone uses this technique or some sort of variation The variation is: instead of eating one sausage and wetting one bread you do this with two hot dogs at the same time That means that you’ll get 2 sausages, eat them, and them eat one bread and then the other This technique could give even more speed, and it’s the one that Joey uses today And when I train I’ll probably start with only one hot dog, so I can learn the technique and get better And I’ll probably migrate. It’s really complicated, you have to keep doing a lot of things at the same time So you may get confused, and even more because of the being nervous during the championship All of this has to be really automatic And when you start to get full, near the ending, you’ll need extra liquid, and there are some glasses of water that you use for drinking But the ideal is to use only the water from the bread to wash the food down But it seems that the only person that can do this is Joey. When you watch the videos everyone is drinking extra water by the end of the championship And Joey is the only one that can sustain this technique until the end And that’s it, we already know about the history, the techniques… and the prize? Some people asked me about it I forgot to mention this on the video that I posted. The first place wins US$10.000,00; the second place US$5.000,00 and the third place US$2.500,00 So it’s a lot of money involved. It’s a little impossible to take Joey’s first place, but the prize is still good But someone has to do this, someone has to train just like he did and has to get there And everyone is basically trying this, take Joey’s first place I’ll do many practice sessions, you’ll see, this video will have a practice session after all this talking, and I want to do lots of sessions to see what my potential is Where I have to get better and analyse all this and you’ll all see this on the channel I’m always posting on Instagram, this sessions will happen here in Brasília So stay tuned, ’cause on Instagram, on the stories and on the posts, I’ll tell you guys about it Lastly, I’ll just talk about the championship’s rules: now it lasts 10 minutes, it was different before… Whoever eats more hot dogs within this 10 minutes wins. You can use liquids, condiments, whatever you want, although no one uses it And, to participate on the 4th of July, you have to participate on the classificatories on the months before. It’s around 10~12 classificatories, and the champions of the classificatories are qualified for the 4th of July championship to compete with the other competitors I’ll have to go twice to the USA, they’ll release the dates near the end of the year I’ll try to anticipate myself and buy the plane tickets, so it won’t be too expensive And, if I win the classificatories, I’ll be back there on the 4th of July So, all of this will be a little expensive, but I’ll do this practice sessions and show you guys, I’ll try to save some money Link to help on the description I’ve never wanted so badly to participate on a championship as now To at least know where I can get on the ranking, meet the competitors, really compete side by side, this is one of my goals now And we’ll get it! And now you’ll see my practice session, I thank everyone’s attention And let’s do this ’cause I’m hungry! Well guys, now that you already know Nathan’s history, I’m here at The Famous BD to do my first practice session We made a partnership ’cause they’re making a hot dog specially for me very similar to the one we find on Nathan’s So I can simulate a practice as close as possible to the championship ‘Cause the hot dog isn’t really like the ones we find on the supermarket Hugo, the owner of The Famous BD, will explain how this hot dog is He came and mentioned that he’ll go to Nathan’s classifications, on the USA Which is the world’s biggest food competition And we talked and he saw that our hot dog uses the bread and the frankfurt sausage, which are used on Nathan’s We also contacted Sérgio, from Schetini, that produces our sausages With their good quality The product that we already make,
coincidentally, is really close to the one on the competition, so we tried to adapt And we are surely rooting for him to win this prize next year Ok guys, the hot dogs are already here, they have the exact weight as in Nathan’s This is really good ’cause I’ll be able to simulate a really close practice You saw the technique when I talked about it earlier There are different ways to eat, one of them is eating two sausages and then two breads Here, in order to learn the technique, I’ll start with one sausage and one bread, ok? So let’s start this practice! 3… 2… 1… Go! This is the first Nathan’s practice, and first I want to thank The Famous BD and Schetini ‘Cause they’re being the first partners on this journey You can notice that I didn’t start that fast, I was more focused on my hands’ movements To try and maintain a pattern, than with the speed itself Which was easy at first, but I started to change what each hand did as the challenge went on So I need to be more aware One thing that I didn’t notice at first is that I was bending the sausages and they weren’t breaking One of the objectives is to break the sausages to make it easier to eat And one thing that I surely need to improve is the dunking, which is to dip the bread in the water ‘Cause I noticed that it isn’t absorbing enough water And, surely, if this gets better I’ll swallow them faster On the next practice session I’ll try to change to the two sausages and two breads technique So I can compare to today’s numbers and see if I’ll really migrate to this other technique And, of course, with more practicing I’ll tolerate even more the taste and, probably, the numbers will rise just because of this So the idea is to train more each time So I’ll be heading out now. Check out the rest of the practice and remember to follow me on Instagram So you’ll know about all the challenges, ok? Thanks, and see you next time! That’s it guys, this was the first Nathan’s practice! 35 hot dogs in 10 minutes! I’m happy with the numbers, there’s 5 hot dogs left and this I’ll take home It’s almost 3kg of food, a little less, around 2,8kg Apart from the weight of the water I used to wet the hot dogs And that’s it, work hard to get even better, have a good margin, ’cause, although we’re trying to make it as close to Nathan’s, it’s not the same thing So I have to have a good margin of error so I don’t do badly when the time comes Stay tuned to my Instagram, where I’ll announce the next practice sessions Soon I’ll have another one, I want you all to come ’cause we’ll probably have a really nice event And dude, I want to thank The Famous BD again, it’s on the video’s description, check out their place, their menu They don’t have just this hot dog, they have many other things And that’s it for now guys! Let’s practice even more! And if you don’t know the channel, subscribe, leave a thumbs up, follow me on Instagram And thanks! Subscribe And activate the notifications
